KOIF c’est d’abord une exposition d’art contemporain

autour de la coiffure, de ses enjeux, de ses problématiques et des questions
qu’elle pose. Au carrefour du naturel et du culturel, de l’esthétique, du
social et du politique, la coiffure s’impose au regard de celui qui veut la
lire, qu’il s’agisse des longs cheveux de Samson, symbole de sa puissance,
d’une hémisphère dans une chevelure chez Baudelaire ou de la crête
contestataire de Johnny Rotten. L’océan Indien recèle à ce titre des pratiques
et des stratégies particulières qu’il fallait interroger et mettre en scène.
C’est l’objet de cet ouvrage qui réunit autour de la koif, des artistes de
Madagascar, des Comores et de l’île de La Réunion avec des critiques et des
philosophes. De ce dialogue, naissent des horizons de question mais également
des outils pour appréhender l’autre dans sa singulière différence.

What is KOIF? Well, it is first and foremost an
exhibition of contemporary art, dealing with the world of hairstyles, and the
many challenges, issues and the questions it raises. Stood at the crossroads of
various themes such as culture, nature, society, politics and aesthetics,
hairstyles are there on show for anyone who wishes to admire them, be they the
flowing locks of Samson, symbolic of his strength, Baudelaire’s poetic odes to
hairstyles or the punky spikes of Johnny Rotten. And in this mould, the Indian
Ocean also boasts a variety of special practices and techniques that needed to
be examined and exhibited. This is the object of this book, which brings
artists from Madagascar, Comoros and Reunion Island together with critics and
philosophers to share their feelings about the ‘KOIF’. And from this exchange a
myriad of questions have risen forth, along with a variety of techniques and
ways to appreciate the singular differences between us all.
